Beginning a New Book

Many of you probably don’t know this,

but my last book, “Escape Velocity” was more or less an accident.

Let me explain.

I was trying to write a book on Complexity, Organizational Structures, Management Styles, and Decision Making Protocols. I know — a real page-turner, right? And I got writer’s block. After several months of essentially writing and re-writing the same three paragraphs, I decided to get some help.

A friend of mine, and a very experienced author, Johanna Rothman, suggested that I “just write”. I was to not worry about the content. Just dedicate a block of time each day to writing and let whatever came to me flow onto the page.

I think the intention was that I’d get past the block and then be able to return to the book. But instead, I found myself writing on metrics and adjacent topics for days on end. So I decided that this must be the thing I am supposed to write next. I let go, and I let it happen.

I am thankful to Johanna and others who encouraged me and supported me. I am glad for the experience and I am grateful for the reception the book has received in the community.

In my opinion, the book reads like it was an accident. I didn’t put sufficient thought into the structure, I didn’t hone the message, and I didn’t do enough editing.

This time I want to try something different

This time, I want to write on the subject of my Behaviors Framework:

  • Know the problem you are solving.

  • Make your work visible.

  • Work together.

  • Create simple things in small steps.

  • Be meticulous about composition.

  • Validate before, during, and after.

  • Release ridiculously often.

  • Favor automation over documentation.

And I want to up my game. Big time.

My plan is to write a series of blog posts all related to the behaviors framework. Some of them will be about a specific behavior. Some of them will be about tools or techniques that help teams express one or more of the behaviors. Some of them will be my own experiences. And some will be damn near complete fiction.

The idea here, is that I want to create a LOT of content. Way more than I need for a book. This process will help me to shape my thinking and hone the message. Most importantly — I hope — is that it will allow me to get real feedback from you.

My goal is to publish an average of one article per week. If you want early access to the articles, come on over to https://docondev.substack.com/ where I’ll be publishing articles a month ahead of other platforms.

Let’s do this!
